How to Install A New Sewage Pump

You bought a new sewage pump and you uninstalled the old one. What tools do I need? How do I install it? CHONGMU gives some basic methods and steps, please follow the steps below to install the replacement sump pump correctly.

How to Install A New Sewage Pump

Step 1: Prepare the basin

If you removed the old sump pump, the first step is to check the empty jetting pit for signs of basin damage or any other signs that look abnormal. Carefully remove any loose debris or material stuck to the walls of the basin. If you have replacement gaskets to reseal the lid, use a scraping tool to remove the old gasket (if applicable) to ensure the new seal is secure. This is important to prevent odors or gas leaks.

Step 2: Install a new check valve

Before placing the pump in the sump, install a new check valve. You can purchase a quiet check valve that is virtually silent when working, which is a nice feature when using a basement bathroom.
If you don't want to deal with backflow later, now is the time to install a ball valve above the location where the check valve is installed, as close to it as possible. This is an optional step, but will make future maintenance more enjoyable.

Step 3: Test the pump and switch

Plug the new injection pump into the dedicated circuit to test the pump. Activate the float switch and make sure the pump is on. IMPORTANT: Only allow the pump to run long enough to hear it work; you never want to stop the sump pump or it could be damaged.
Remember to make sure the float switch is set at the correct height of the pump to ensure proper operation. Having the float switch activated too low or too high in the water basin may affect performance.

Step 4: Connect the pump to the discharge pipe

Use primer and PVC cement to attach the male adapter to one end of the PVC pipe. After bonding, use a wrench to screw the adapter end of the PVC pipe to the effluent ejector pump to tighten. Do not over-tighten or the fitting may break.

Step 5: Drill a drain hole

Arguably one of the most important steps, the hole needs to be drilled to prevent air lock in the pipe from causing the pump to dry out. Without a drain hole, water below the check valve will drain back into the pit and compress the air left in the piping, which may prevent water from leaving the pump the next time you try to empty the pool.

Step 6: Measure and cut the PVC pipe

If the bottom discharge pipe is to be replaced, measure the length of the old discharge pipe, taking into account that the final measurement may be slightly different with the new check valve installed.
Use a saw to cut the pipe on the raised surface and use a safety knife as a deburring tool to smooth out the cut edges.

Step 7: Lower the sump pump into the ejector pit

Properly cut and securely attach the drain pipe to the sump pump, then lower both into the sump pit via the pump handle.
Keep the float switch pointing away from the inlet (where the wastewater enters the sump). You can adjust the direction of the discharge pipe to stop water from the inlet from directly covering the pump.

Step 8: Connecting the discharge pipe to the check valve

Connect the coupler to the top of the cut PVC pipe using the same technique: primer and PVC glue. Slide the adapter at the bottom of the check valve onto the coupler before attaching it to the discharge pipe.
Then, attach the glue-on coupler to the pipe and align the discharge pipe with the check valve. Slide the adapter upward and hand tighten the threads to the top and bottom check valves.

Step 9: Install the waste basin cover

Make sure the new gasket is attached and ready to adhere to the lid. Use the electrical clue ring to pull the wires up and seal the blank space. Pull any remaining wires over the lid and tie them to the discharge tube with zipper ties. Finally, attach the loop gasket by sliding it over the top of the vent tube and locking it in the groove.

Step 10: Attaching the discharge pipe to the top of the cover

The effluent ejector pump system needs to be piped to the sink to vent odors and gas buildup. These vents need to be vented outdoors and the ducting is usually connected to the main chimney of your home where the other ducts are connected. Once the two ducts are securely connected, reinforce with sealant around the remaining space to ensure a proper seal is made.
